Here We Are

over50inworkplace

Entering the mature stage of my career brought surprises including facing the fact that my promotional opportunities might be behind me, indeed, many of us become so effective in our roles, we may have inadvertently signal to management that we are worker bees. I was surprised that manager after manager was seemingly intimidated by my expertise in my field, expertise that can only be gained by working in the field for many years. Somewhere along the line, managers stopped considering me for promotion. Younger employees were brought in at higher levels. The last 3 years of my career have been disappointing, and at times, devastating.

Career crisis forced me to ask for (and receive) mental health care and I started engaging others about the barriers/challenges our generation faces. Afterall, two spaces after a period in a sentence is forbidden. My journey in this career crisis has led me to learn new ways of coping with professional challenges and job loss. Across social media, we see others expressing similar experiences and career loss.

Community is one of the best ways to cope, and I hope that you will join me in building a community that is here for support. There is no intent here to monetize, sell anything, engage in referrals to other businesses or services.

The blog will be used to generate thoughts on various topics. I will link articles that may be discussion worthy, and invite others to share their experiences including how others have met these later career challenges. I have a meet up group that anyone can join and we have virtual meetings via zoom every other month.

Please join me. Let's walk this road together.
